The most successful businesses from 16 German Federal states
Rhodius Schleifwerkzeuge receives special prize
On 25 October Rhodius, the grinding tool manufacturer from Burgrohl, received a special prize in the “Grosser Preis des Mittelstandes”, a competition for medium-sized businesses. The Oskar Patzelt Foundation from Leipzig awarded these special prizes to businesses and institutions for outstanding performance in the promotion of medium-sized businesses at a Federal gala in Berlin. This was the conclusion to this year’s competition, the 14th for the awarding of the “Grosser Preis des Mittelstandes”, the only prize in Germany that appraises medium-sized businesses as a whole: according to their economic development, job security, innovative strength, local presence and social commitment in the region. This is already the third time that the grinding tool manufacturer has received an award from the Oskar Patzelt Foundation: In 2005 Rhodius was awarded the “Grosser Preis des Mittelstandes” and in 2006 the title “CE Certified Entrepreneur”.
This family business, which was founded in 1952, is one of the leading manufacturers of cutting and grinding discs in Europe. According to managing shareholder Gerald Lichter, the success of the premium manufacturer, whose increase in sales has been a two-digit percentage in the last five years, is a result of three factors: modern process engineering and manufacturing technology, constant innovation for the benefit of the professional user and target group-specific marketing focusing on the excellent cost-effectiveness offered by the Rhodius brand. The latest example of the company’s innovative strength is the XT35 Cross, the first disc in the world with a thickness of only 1.9 mm that the operator can use for both cutting and grinding.
Central to the work of the company’s employees, currently around 200 in number, is the user, who is provided with the best product for each task. The business strategy focuses consistently on the requirements of the user and the challenges of the market, and has therefore brought about a transformation from a production-oriented business to one focused on sales and service. Rhodius Schleifwerkzeuge wants to pursue this strategy further in order to be able to increase its market share in Europe from the current figure of 9 per cent to 15 per cent by 2013.
