Mechanical oscillations (synonym: percussions, vibrations) are one of the physical environmental factors to which people can be exposed at their place of work. Whereas drivers and passengers of vehicles such as fork-lift trucks, earth-moving machinery and track vehicles as well as workers on stationary units are exposed to so-called whole-body vibrations (WBV), users of hand-held or hand-guided tools (power saws, road breakers, chisel hammers, grinders) have to come to terms with hand-arm vibrations (HAV). The load impact is hereby determined by the frequency and amplitude of the vibration. But the direction of vibration, isolated or repetitive shock and grip force (for hand-arm vibrations) also affect the impact. The exposure time of course also plays a very important role (daily, annually, professional life) (Figure 1).
